Training includes pumps theory (centrifugal and positive displacement) with hands-on lab projects work with pumping systems loops, utilizing measurements, measuring tools, modifications and updating loop setups, along with theoretical understanding of the underlying principles. A written report is required by the students upon project completion. A Certificate of Graduation is presented. Special accommodations for international students may be arranged. The program is also intended to help students to become more productive when entering the work force, or enhancing their present work skills, by acquiring a taste of real industrial rotating machinery.
The program is available for practicing industry professional as well as college undergraduate and graduate students from any departments as a qualified elective. This yearly program consists of two semesters (Pumps-101 (basic) and Pumps-201 (advanced), with weekly 3-hour (4 academic hours) classes (2 hours of theory followed by 2 hours lab hand-on and project work to reinforce the theory).

The program augments theory with hands-on exercises, reassembly of the centrifugal and positive displacement pumps' internals to become fully familiar with the internal construction and functional importance of all elements (impeller, casing, shaft, bearings, seals, etc.). The students can select lab projects based on the availability, with some of the currently available projects listed below. New projects periodically are added or modified.
The classes are conducted in English with some interaction in Hebrew, and some fundamental knowledge of English is helpful. The cost of the study is 5500 NIS(4500 for early registration) per semester for the industrial attendees and 1500 nis for the students currently actively enrolled in a college program. Classes are each Tuesday 17:00 pm to 20:00 pm in order to accommodate those with a full time job schedules. However, some flexibility is possible as coordinated with the instructor, particularly with regard to the laboratory projects and thesis work.
Note: projects (listed below) are subject to availability depending on sign-up students group size. Enrollment is limited and early registration is recommended.
1. Pumps performance projects: hand-on work with an enclosed pumps-to-piping loop. Measurements of pressures, flow, power, and constructing Head-Capacity, Power-Capacity, and Efficiency curves. Compare with theoretical calculations. Field trips to relate laboratory scaled model testing with the full size industrial operating pumps.
2. Cavitation study project. Live operation of centrifugal pumps under cavitating regimes. Constructing NPSHR curves. Visualization of cavitation and comparison to the effects of air injection on performance, versus classical cavitation.
3. Vibration analysis of operating pumps to detect: unbalance, misalignment, cavitation, looseness, foundation effects. Overall vibrations trending versus FFT spectral analysis.
4. Alignment of pumps to motors - hands-on exercises.
5. Abrasive wear in pumps: laboratory experiments with comparative weight loss due to wear under adverse operating fluids (solid particles included in liquid) against various materials (carbon steel, stainless, duplex, composites, and similar materials)
6. Pumps Efficiency and Energy consumption - Data Acquisition System, testing in local and remote regimes, with live construction of performance and comparison with theoretically predicted. The activity is certified by the Ministry of Energy of Israel, for the official measurements of pumps efficiency in the field in Israel.
7. Computer Simulation and numerical solution for the hydraulic problems with pumps and piping. Includes geometry CAD construction of piping system, determining flow regime (laminar, turbulent), applying boundary conditions, solution and post-processing. Comparing results to the actual laboratory testing, and applying examples to actual industrial piping installations of pumping systems. Becoming familiar with ANSYS fluid flow (Fluent) and mechanical/structural numerical programs.
